ended up ripping some 1/2" plywood and screwing it to the top and one side of the rough opening and then screwing the door assembly to that. Not exactly what I wanted, but it works for now. I may change the side "shim" at a later date, but the top is good so the bottom door flange sits flush against the "floor" of the island storage space.
