I got the bottom sanded down to 320 grit and then grabbed the shellac and pumice. Dip the pad into the shellac, then the pumice, add a drop or two of mineral oil and start 'scrubbing'. Using moderate pressure and a circular motion, the pumice and sawdust fill the cracks. Normally, the cracks would all but disappear, but I'm not looking for a perfect finish so I'll only do enough to get things smooth and the cracks filled level with the surrounding surfaces. The big stain is where my shellac tipped over and spilled all over the piece and the floor.
