This area looks to be where a branch 'intersection' was and the bark inside was kind of loose. I put some aluminum tape on the edges and mixed up some epoxy to fill the hole. I'll let this dry and then hit it with the orbital and add more epoxy if necessary. When it's finished, it'll just look like a dark area of the wood.
