There was no way in hell I was going to try and fix this mess, so I started ripping it all out. As I started disassembly, I found even more issues. This bracket is the 'gauge' to provide a critical heat clearance to combustible material dimension, specifically 6-5/8" from the finished edge on the fireplace. (That "L" shaped piece on the left of the picture.) With this bend, that dimension was nearly 1/2" too short.
